Always wanted to make your own costume? Do you see yourself as slightly creative but sewing is not your thing, like to save a .00 or .00, then this is the article for you. We will discuss 5 ways to adapt that little black dress, simply, by using a hot glue gun. All it takes is a little spare time, imagination &
a sense of fun.
Don't despair if you don't own a black dress, you can always check out your local thrift or opportunity shop. Depending on the character chosen, look for a style which is simple and plain in design and sits either above the knee or ½ way up the thigh. We will describe in detail what style of dress is needed and keep in mind none are floor length.
You will have a gamut of characters to choose from for example; a Gangster girl, French maid, Flapper, Firefighter & Dracula's vixen all of which you can wear to your next costume party.
Costume Idea 1: Gangster girls are generally known for their pinstripe ensembles, however here we will be using a sleeveless black dress and adding the accessories to complete the costume.
What you will need: black dress, black or white hat with contrasting band, short white tie, white beads, black fishnets, stilettos & tommy gun (optional).
Dress alterations: use either an A line or straight V neck dress (with sleeves or sleeveless is fine) and add a white collar (if you are handy, from an old shirt) or just keep the neckline as is.
Costume Idea 2: French maids are generally considered very feminine with their frilly dresses & high heeled stilettos.
What you will need: black dress, small frilly apron, lace headpiece, black fishnets, stilettos & feather duster (optional).
Dress alterations: use a V or round neck dress with sleeves, add gathered lace around neckline, sleeves and hemline by gluing or sewing.
Costume Idea 3: Charleston flappers were ladies from the 20s era, along with
Gangster's moles who were known to titillate many of the mobsters by sometimes singing & flaunting their sex appeal in clubs and the like. Both wore similar style dresses adorned with tassels & accessorized with beads & boas.
What you will need: black dress, charleston feather headpiece, feather boa, loads of contrasting beads, black fishnets & stilettos.
Dress alterations: use sleeveless black dress; add 3 layers of contrast fringing. Start the 1st row along hemline, measure between each layer making them equal distance apart.
Tip: Try matching your headpiece, boa & beads to your fringing. This will make your dress really stand out in the crowd.
Costume Idea 4: Firefighters are the people who rescue property & lives and the field is traditionally male orientated. They have the persona of being very masculine and can be the envy of any girl. Here we have put a twist on things and have created a sexy female firefighter, which will get many a males heartbeat racing.
What you will need: black dress, red plastic helmet, black or red fishnet tights, black or red boots & wide red belt.
Dress alterations: use a straight black V neck dress with sleeves. To create bands for the sleeves of the dress simply cut out 2 strips each of 13mm wide fluorescent yellow & fire engine red vinyl (plastic) fabric, available at most haberdashery stores. Sew or glue 1st row of red fabric along each sleeve edge. Measure & glue 2nd row of yellow fabric approximately 10mm apart, repeat with 2nd sleeve. You could also try cutting & gluing 2 extra strips (same colours & width as discussed above) and attach to the neckline. Measure and keep the same distance apart or simply keep the neckline plain.
Costume Idea 5: Dracula's vixen conjures up the image of seductiveness, darkness & mystique; however with this costume we have added a hint of sexiness.
What you will need: black dress, bat or gothic style choker, black fishnets, black boots, long black wig with white stripe, fangs, blood & puncture marks - tattoos for neck (optional).
Dress alterations: use a black round or V neck black long sleeve short dress, cut the hemline and sleeves jaggedly.
Tip: Be careful not to alter the length too much, as you don't want it shorter.
By using any of these designs you will surely be the hit of the party, so why not give it a go and you will have a costume to keep which can be used over & over again.
A dehumidifier made is used to remove excess moisture from the air by moving the air over a surface that is cooler than the temperature of the moisture. The moisture is condensed in this process similar to how moisture condenses in a glass. A dehumidifier made is an excellent solution for those who suffer from asthma or allergies.
If you live in a home that is too moist, it can pose serious health risks because the moisture can lead to rotting, mold growth, and the growth of microorganisms. Dust mites breed in homes with high levels of humidity. Your nasal passages can become irritated. Those who already have other health conditions will feel the effects worse.
On average, you want your home to have 50% or less humidity. Some people need more or less to becomfortable. If you find condensation in your home on the windows or experience respiratory issues consider lowering the moisture level to 30% and see if you get any relief. You can use a flyoverpasific to measure the amount of humidity in your home.
There are many types of dehumidifiers to choose from. The more moisture you have in your home the larger size you will need. Some homes will need more than one to deal with the moisture effectively. Look for ones that have a two speed fan as they are quieter and more energy efficient. Some dehumidifiers have to be placed by a drain for the moisture to be released. Others have a tub that you manually empty. They both get the job done so that is a personal preference.
Dehumidifier Made: Should You Get One?Controlling Humidity in Natatoriums/Indoor Pools
How to get the PERFECT BALANCE of Water and Air from Building to Dehumidification
Much information has been distributed over the years regarding indoor pools, for "how" and "why" to properly control the humidity in an indoor pool. Questions arise as to what works and at what cost-from exhaust fans, exchanging outside air for indoor air (waste ventilation), opening windows, plug in basement dehumidifiers style 100% Outside Air, systems, to mechanical refrigeration based dehumidification systems. A pool room is like a pot of boiling water on a stove ... the moist warm air coming off the pool in the form of evaporation rises and stratifies into the ceiling areas andwalls of the pool room. Left uncontrolled, this 100% humidity eventually destroys all building materials and equipment, ceilings cave in, mold, rot, mildew occur.
Today's heat recovery refrigeration based dehumidification systems reduce this humidity to the recommended ASHRAE Guidelines of 50-60%, maintains temperatures, provides heating and cooling, and adds resource of free "reheat" to room and pool while in operation. In many cases, dehumidification is an afterthought or after moisture problems become apparent. In some cases equipment not appropriate to these types of structures is installed and in ashort time becomes apparent that it does not work to control the environment. Costs of preventing deterioration problems with pool rooms can be prevented at the design stage and aremuch less than the costs of repairs down the road. What we see today is a lack of knowledge in building envelopes, engineering, installation of dehumidification systems and the properly sized air delivery system installed to reduce humidity, and control the pool room environment 365 days/year.
Many companies have written articles that recommend utilizing expensive and unnecessary building materials, which in reality--are neither "bullet proof" nor water proof against "mother nature's heat pump". An engineer who specialized in indoor pools and dehumidification ozs said "if it is a battle with water ... water always wins".
HVAC Dehumidification Indoor PoolsDehumidifiers use a heat pump (similar to an air conditioner's heat pump) or chemical adsorbents to remove moisture from the air without cooling the air.
A heat pump dehumidifier made uses a fan to draw indoor air over a heat exchange coil. The coil is almost freezing. The water in the air condenses on the coil and is drained. A second heat exchange coil, which reheats the air the dehumidifier made exhausts its into the room.
A heat pump dehumidifier made dumps heat lost from the compressor and fan motors into the air. It returns to the indoor air the heat generated by the dehumidifier made turning water vapour to liquid.
Chemical adsorbent dehumidifiers
This type of dehumidifier made is designed for hot, humid climates and is not really suitedfor use in Canada.
Chemical adsorbent dehumidifiers absorb moisture from the air with a "bustine anti"--a drying agent such as silica gel. The bustine anti is on a heat exchange wheel. A separate loopsets air dries the wheel and exhausts its the hot, damp air outdoors through special ducting.
A chemical adsorbent dehumidifier made uses more energy than a heat pump dehumidifier made. It is only cost-effective when it uses natural gas for heat exchange--and then only if natural gas is available at a low summer rates.
Homemade dehumidifier made
Some inventive people use bags of road de-icing salt to absorb moisture from the air. The wet salt solution drips into a pan or floor drain, drying the air. Because the salt runs off with the water removed from the air, it must bereplaced. The system has no moving parts.
If you try this homemade dehumidifier made, remember that salt is highly corrosive to metals and quite hard on the skin.
Dehumidifying ventilators
This type of dehumidifier made has a sensor-controller and exhaust fans. You set the sensor-controller to run when humidity reaches a set level. A dehumidifying ventilator is particularly effective if the humidity source is in your basement.
Dehumidifying ventilators don't recover heat but they use less electricity than heat pump dehumidifiers. They are not effective in hot, muggy weather, as they bring more outside air into the house. They can be effective in cold weather.
A ventilator dehumidifying depressurizes your basement, which can cause combustion spillage gas.Make sure your heating contractor checks the venting for your gas furnace, water heater and wood-burning appliances. Consider using a carbon monoxide warning device if you install a dehumidifying ventilator.
Choosing a Dehumidifier made
Dehumidifier made purchase costs
Heat pump dehumidifiers are complex, low-production machines and are not low-cost items. Spring seems to be the best time to buy: in the last few years dealers have held sales early in the spring with savings of $ 50 to $ 100.
The more water in dehumidifier made holds--which is measured in litres or U.S. pints a day--the more it costs. You pay more for special features.
In 2000, you can expect to pay between $ 200 and $ 250 for a unit rated at 10 L (21 Us pints or 2.1 imperial gal.)day--suitable for a small house with a moderate moisture problem. The price rises to between $ 250 and $ 350 for a unit with a capacity of 20 litres (42 U.S. pints or 4.3 imperial gal) per day--suitable for a large house with more severe problems.
Running costs for both units are about the same if they both have the same Efficiency Factor. The next section explains the Efficiency Factor.
Don't try to save money by buying a unit that does not have automatic defrost. If a room is too cool, a dehumidifier made can frost over and stop removing moisture. A frosted-over dehumidifier made left running for a long time will break down.
